Know More About Braces
It is important to know as much as possible about your braces. Here are a few pieces of information that you might find helpful.
It is not just teenagers who end up wearing braces. Children as young as six might need them to correct a jaw problem. It is also common for an adult to wear braces to correct an issue that was not fixed by braces when younger.
Metal braces are the most common type of braces. These are applied to your teeth in our office, and they will stay on your teeth until we remove them.
It is important to brush your teeth immediately after you eat if you have traditional metal braces. This will prevent plaque from forming. Do not think that you can brush later. Carry a toothbrush with you so that nothing will stay stuck in your braces. Your friends will understand.
There will be some discomfort for a couple of days after you receive traditional metal braces. This is nothing to be concerned about. We will supply you with orthodontic wax, which will help the issue.
Do not be surprised if your teeth feel loose not long after you receive the braces. This is a common issue. Your teeth need to loosen up a little bit so that they will be able to move to their new spot in your jaw.
If you play sports, we need to know about it. This is because we will want to fit you with a custom-made mouthguard. The mouthguard will be made to fit your mouth and protect your teeth and your braces. Make sure that you use it.
There will be some types of foods that you will want to stay away from while you have your braces. Stick to soft foods if your mouth is sore for the first few days. After that, skip foods that are sticky or that are too hard when you bite down on them. You will also need to stay away from gum.
There are other choices besides traditional metal braces. You could be a good candidate for Damon braces, Invisalign®, or ceramic braces. We will discuss your options with you in our office.
With traditional braces, most people will wear them for about two years. That may seem like a long time, but it will go quickly. Here at Robinson Orthodontics, we will watch over you during that time to make sure that your braces are doing their job. Call (541) 441-8288 to make an appointment so that we can get started. The time will go quickly, and you will soon have a fantastic smile.
